New Audio Visual Technology

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Blue Shadow Group has had many enquires about what the best technology to use in various environments. We consider ourselves at Blue Shadow Group specialists when it comes to screen technology, but like any profession we need to stay on top of all the latest technology coming into the marketplace, especially when we hire so many different types of screens, from projection screens, to LCD’s and Plasmas.

We have 36mtr screens at our disposal that can do what is called Blend pro, this is the art of blending a number of projectors together to make one large image. This is fabulous technology, but still does not come cheap.

Other options include water screen technology, this is getting used in special situations where it is more about looking impressive in a dark zone area, and typically for special events and theme parks. It is not something you would use to watch a movie all night long because the clarity is not as good as a proper screen surface but does the job for logos and short advertising video campaigns or even a kids short cartoon.

The greatest technology now being used in function facilities as entrance features and in exhibition environment is the LCD screen brick technology.

You have to live with the brick effect of the panels, but looking past that you have a wonderful HD image on a very large scale, the detail is absolutely amazing to the eye.

Also for TV shows this is becoming more and more the norm as the backdrops they use now, looks great when you see this on TV aswell, crystal clear.

The other technology that is becoming better by the day is LED pixel screens, now it is not as good as the LCD as just mentioned by the improvements on the 6mm pixel separation is becoming better and has a wide range of applications including being used as outdoor screens for golf tournaments, other sporting events. They make these screens as all weather options and a cheaper version that can be used indoors as back drops for stage at events and billboards in the exhibition centre.

Samsung have just brought out some really exciting new technology aswell.

The new 65inch LCD billboard touch screens are fantastic. Great for use in shopping centres and anywhere you want an active display board these are great. Obviously you don’t need a keyboard and mouse you just touch or tap the screen away and get the information you need, literally at your fingertips.

They provide great clarity in environments that are in direct sunlight, a true winner, especially for the price, which is about a fifth of the price they originally were for a less suitable product.

AV Tips for Conference Organisers Part 2

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Brisbane & Gold Coast Audio Visual

Organising a conference or seminar can be a lot of work and audio visual is just a part of that. In this article we’re going to go over a few items that are often overlooked and can make the conference run much more smoothly or professionally.

Audio

When using lapel mics make sure you order enough microphones to cover your presenters. If you only have one presenter on stage at a time you still should order 2 mics. This means that the next presenter can be mic’d up whilst  the current presenter is still on stage.

If you have an MC that uses a lapel mic they will require their own one and keep it on for the day.

Have the presenters go to the ops desk to be mic’d up rather than the operator having to run up to stage or the presenters passing mics to each other. This ensures that the mic is fitted properly by the operator.

If you have a presenter that you know is very quietly spoken it is probably best that you insist they use a handheld mic or a lecturn mic. Lapel mics are very difficult to control when you have a quiet speaker and need more volume.

For Q&A sessions make sure you have enough handheld mics ordered for the room. Some organisers prefer to put the mics on a stand and have the audience member walk up to the mic whilst others prefer to have runners (staff members that will run the mic out to the questioner)

If you have two or more people speaking at a lecturn (especially awards) then order a lecturn with two microphones. This ensures an even coverage.

The size of the quoted PA system will be decided by the number of people you have attending. If that number substantially changes then let your AV supplier know.

AV Tips for Conference Organisers Part 1

Brisbane & Gold Coast Audio Visual

Organising a conference or seminar can be a lot of work and audio visual is just a part of that. In this article we’re going to go over a few items that are often overlooked and can make the conference run much more smoothly or professionally.

Vision

When we operate a conference here at Blue Shadow Group we prefer to run all the presentations off of a laptop at the ops desk. This means that if there are any glitches or issues with the speaker’s presentation the AV operator can look after it whilst the speaker continues.

Because the laptop is not in front of the presenter make sure you also order a remote mouse (often referred to as a “clicker”) so the presenter can still control their slides.

Also with this set up you should ensure you have a foldback monitor or screen on the stage so the presenter does not have to look over his/her shoulder to check that the slide has advanced. This is usually an LCD screen on a tilted floor mount.

Projectors work best in a dark room so if possible have all drapes or blinds closed during the visual presentations, this also eradicates any distractions outside.

When ordering a projector you will usually be quoted the appropriate projector for the screen size. Projector brightness is measured in “Lumens” and the higher the number the brighter the image will be. For smaller screens (6-8ft) a 2000-3000 Lumens projector is generally acceptable, for medium screens (10-12ft) go with a 3500-5000 Lumens projector and for larger screens 6000 and up. If the room is going to be brightly lit you’re better off with a brighter projector.

Remember to order DVD players if any of the presenters are playing video. It looks and works much better than playing it off a laptop.

When there is more than one source for the screen (eg 2 laptops, dvds etc) you will need a presentation switcher. This changes between sources seamlessly and provides a much more professional looking conference.

Even if you are only using one laptop it’s always a good idea to add another laptop and switcher and create a holding slide, this would be put onscreen when changing presentations and during breaks in the day.

5 Great ways to promote your video online – Tip 5

Tip 5

Share Your Videos In Niche Communities

In the same manner in which you share your video with niche bloggers (such as food bloggers for cooking videos), you should search for niche communities, groups and forums to share your videos as well.  If there is a Facebook group for bread lovers then join it and post a link to your bread baking video; if you discover a forum for people who make ice cream then share a link to the video in which you share your recipe for cherry chocolate truffle milkshakes.

Just keep in mind that different groups and communities have rules about sharing links and videos, so check first to make sure that you are complying with the rules and don’t be spammy.  It is important to only share your videos in relevant forums and communities that you think will gain something from viewing your content.

5 Great ways to promote your video online – Tip 4

Tip 4

Reach Out To Bloggers

If you are looking to get a lot of views on your videos in a small amount of time then one of your best bets is to reach out to bloggers.  Search for bloggers that cover the sorts of topics that you are making videos about.  For instance, if you have created a series of cooking videos, in which you share your favorite recipes, then you can contact food bloggers to let them know about your project.  You may never hear back from them, but if you are lucky they could write about you and embed some of your videos on their blog.

Reaching out to bloggers can be frustrating at times, as it can be difficult to find contact information and you could email fifty bloggers and only hear back from a few.  However, if you take the time to share your work with relevant bloggers it could pay off.

On a side note, when contacting bloggers it’s always best to personalize it.  We know when you’ve just copy-pasted a form email to us, but if you seem to really know about us and about the content that we have covered in the past then we will be more likely to get back to you.

5 Great ways to promote your video online – Tip 3

Tip 3

Don’t Underestimate The Power Of Video Sites

When you look at your profile on YouTube or Vimeo or whichever online video site you are using, if you see that you’ve got zero friends or contacts then you are going about things in the wrong way.  One of the best places to promote your videos is on the video sites themselves, through your fellow video creators.  If you don’t have a network in place on your video site yet then get started.

This will take a little bit more time than sharing links on Facebook and Twitter, but is definitely worth it in the long run.  You also don’t have to do it all in one sitting.  As you see other online videos that you like, add the creators to your contacts.  Comment on their posts, send them messages telling them you like their work and start building relationships.  You will quickly discover that these creators will start watching your videos as well, commenting, “liking” and sharing with their own friends.  This can lead to a boost in your video views, not to mention the fact that it will lead to creative inspiration as well as help you to grow and thrive as part of the online video community.

On YouTube you can also promote your videos through video responses.  Find a popular video that is about a similar topic and post your video as a response in the comments field.  Your video will appear directly below the popular video clip, and viewers can click to check it out.

Tip 2

Tap Your Personal Social Networks

What are friends for if not to help you out?  There’s a good chance you already have a Facebook and Twitter account.  Use these sites to promote yourself!  If you’ve just uploaded a new video then post a link to your Facebook account and tweet about your new video on Twitter.  Your friends are want to know what you are up to and what new projects you are working on—otherwise they wouldn’t be a part of your Facebook network or following you on Twitter.

Share your videos on any social bookmarking sites you are a member of as well, such as Stumble Upon.  Ask your friends and contacts to share your video with their friends if they like it, and do the same for them when they share links with you.

When you post videos on Facebook and Twitter you start building your base of views.  Your friends will watch the videos because they know you and, if they enjoy your content, they might even share it with their own networks.  Just keep in mind that you don’t want to take a spammy approach to your friends.  Posting a link to your newest video on your own Facebook wall is fine, but when you start posting your video to all your friends’ walls or tagging all your friends in your videos it can get real old real fast, and could lose you some friends.  However, share subtly and your personal social networks can be a great beginning to spreading your videos online.

A big part of promoting your video comes before the first viewer watches your clip, and that part is optimizing your metadata.  It’s important to optimize your tags, titles and text in order to boost your traffic.  Make sure to include tags and keywords that people will search for in order to discover your video.  If you don’t pay attention to these tiny details when you upload your video then nobody will find it in search results.
